Piston Seals – Double Acting
Double-Acting Piston Seals are used in hydraulic cylinders where continual pressure is maintained on both the forward and backward stroke. They operate with hydraulic pressure on both sides of piston and, therefore, require double-acting seal arrangements to act accordingly. Double-acting cylinders are the most widely used type of cylinders.
Piston seals work by creating a positive sealing force against the bore of the cylinder and preventing fluid from flowing across the piston head into the opposing cylinder chamber. In holding the pressurised fluid from escaping to the opposing chamber, pressure is built up on one side of the piston, making the rod extend or retract.
